Of all the wear and tear tasks our hands go through, washing up has to be one of the toughest.

After years of dry skin and brittle nails from conventional washing up liquids, we decided enough was enough. So we went back to basics and made a washing up liquid that cuts through grease and grime while being kind to your hands. (You might just need a little patience in a hard-water area.)

Here's the honest bit: we use a balanced blend of a coconut-derived surfactant and mild plant-sugar surfactants rather than the high-foaming systems in many conventional brands, so one tiny pump won't fill your sink with foam. Add a few pumps to hot water, give really greasy dishes a little longer to soak, and your dishes will sparkle. ✨

More bubbles don't mean a better clean; that part's just for show.

Scented only with pure lemon and tea tree essential oils, it brings a fresh, uplifting note to the sink, never a synthetic one.

Considered for what's in it and for what isn't.
Here's what you won't find in our Washing Up Liquid:

❌ No synthetic fragrance - scented only with pure lemon and tea tree essential oils.

❌ No dyes - colourants add nothing to how well it cleans, so we leave them out.

❌ No SLES - we use sodium coco-sulfate, a coconut-derived surfactant, with mild glucoside surfactants instead of ethoxylated surfactants such as SLES.

❌ No phthalates - often used to fix synthetic fragrance, and unnecessary when you scent with essential oils.

❌ No parabens or phenoxyethanol - preserved with benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate instead.

❌ No EDTA - water is softened with citrate from citric acid, not the slow-to-degrade synthetic chelator EDTA.

❌ No microplastics - thickened with xanthan gum, made by fermentation, not synthetic polymers.

Refillable by design and handmade in small batches in Wales.

How To Use

Add a few pumps to a sink of hot water. Give really greasy dishes a little longer to soak, and add a few extra pumps if you have hard water.

Avoid contact with eyes.

Ingredients

Full ingredient list (in descending order): Aqua, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Decyl Glucoside, Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside, Glycerin, Benzyl Alcohol, Citric Acid, Sodium Benzoate, Xanthan Gum, Citrus Limon Peel Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil, Limonene.

Contains 5-15% anionic surfactants, <5% non-ionic surfactants. Preservatives: Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Benzoate.

What each ingredient does

Deionised Water is purified water with minerals and impurities removed, so it doesn't interfere with the formula and helps keep it stable.

Sodium Coco-Sulfate is our main cleaning ingredient: a coconut-derived anionic surfactant that cuts through grease and creates the lather. It is not ethoxylated (unlike SLES) and is readily biodegradable.

Decyl Glucoside is a mild, plant-derived non-ionic surfactant made from coconut oil and glucose. It works alongside the sodium coco-sulfate to lift grease and helps make the blend milder on hands. Readily biodegradable.

Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside is a plant-derived, biodegradable surfactant that boosts cleaning and helps disperse the essential oils evenly through the formula.

Vegetable Glycerin is a plant-derived humectant made from soy and coconut oils. We blend our xanthan gum into it first to form a smooth paste, so the gum disperses evenly instead of clumping. Readily biodegradable.

Benzyl Alcohol is a broad-spectrum preservative used in small amounts alongside sodium benzoate, protecting the product itself against bacteria, yeast and mould so it stays fresh once opened. Ours is a pharmaceutical grade meeting European, British, Japanese and US pharmacopoeia standards. Readily biodegradable and non-formaldehyde-releasing.

Citric Acid occurs naturally in citrus fruits; ours is produced by fermentation. It sets the pH of the formula and, as citrate, softens water to help tackle limescale.

Sodium Benzoate is a nature-identical, COSMOS-approved preservative: the salt form of benzoic acid, which occurs naturally in foods such as cranberries and cinnamon. Only a small amount is needed to keep the formula fresh. Readily biodegradable and free from formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasers.

Xanthan Gum is a naturally derived thickener made by fermenting plant sugars. We use a finely milled, cosmetic-grade "clear" form that gives the washing up liquid its body without clouding it. Readily biodegradable.

Essential Oils - Citrus Limon Peel Oil (Lemon), Melaleuca Alternifolia Leaf Oil (Tea Tree). Our only source of scent.

Limonene occurs naturally in lemon essential oil and is listed because it is a fragrance allergen.

EU Ingredients Database

Naturally Occurring Allergens

Benzyl Alcohol, Limonene

A quick note on allergens: essential oils naturally contain fragrance allergens, and our preservative, benzyl alcohol, is also classed as one. Under UK and EU detergent rules, all of them must be listed on packaging. Limonene comes from the lemon essential oil, and we use our essential oils in small amounts, in line with IFRA standards. As with any product, these allergens may cause irritation in some people, particularly those with sensitive skin, so we recommend a patch test if you have known sensitivities. This information is shared for your peace of mind and the sake of complete transparency.

Questions

Does this product foam as much as traditional washing up liquid?

It lathers, but not as much as many conventional brands, and you'll see fewer bubbles in hard water. Bubbles are mostly for show and don't tell you how well a washing up liquid is cleaning. Add a few pumps to hot water, give greasy dishes a moment to soak, and you'll get a thorough clean.

Will I need to use more product for tough grease?

Sometimes. For very greasy pans, add an extra pump or let them soak for a few minutes before washing. In hard-water areas you may need a little more product.

Where can I learn more about the ingredients used?

Transparency is a core value of Lavender & Lemon. A complete list of ingredients is on every bottle and you can find out more about each ingredient on the Ingredients page. Please reach out with any questions you might have.

Is Washing Up Liquid suitable for sensitive skin or allergies?

It's made to be kind to hands, but everyone's skin is different. It contains benzyl alcohol (our preservative) and limonene (from the lemon essential oil), which may cause a reaction in people sensitive to them. Both are listed on the label and product page. If you have sensitive skin or known allergies, patch test first or wear gloves.

Why does Washing Up Liquid have a warning symbol?

All cleaning products sold in Great Britain must be classified and labelled under the GB CLP Regulation. Our Washing Up Liquid carries the exclamation mark symbol and the word "Warning" because it can cause serious eye irritation if it gets into the eyes, as most washing up liquids can. If that happens, rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. The label also names benzyl alcohol, our preservative, because it may cause an allergic reaction in sensitive people.

How do you reduce Washing Up Liquid's environmental impact?

Our surfactants meet the biodegradability requirements of the Detergents Regulation, and we scent with pure essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance, with no dyes, phthalates or microplastics. The bottle is refillable through our Return & Refill scheme, cutting single-use plastic.
