How I keep my footprint low

Caring for the planet shapes how I run Lavender and Lemon. My business has an impact, and reducing it is ongoing work, not something I’ll ever call finished. All of my products come in refillable and recyclable packaging, and through my Return & Refill Scheme you can send empty bottles back to be refilled. I send orders with Royal Mail, which reports the lowest carbon footprint per parcel of any UK parcel operator: around 165g CO₂e per parcel in 2024–25, helped by delivery on foot and almost 9,000 electric vans.

Supporting climate projects with Ecologi

I give part of my revenue to Ecologi, a B Corp whose mission is to inspire and empower businesses to accelerate global climate action. Through Ecologi I fund tree planting, habitat restoration and carbon projects in the UK and around the world. You can see every project I’ve supported on my Ecologi profile.

It’s personal too. Each month I fund projects through Ecologi to cover an estimate of my own carbon footprint: home, travel, hobbies and food.

    Closer to home. Tree planting in the UK, biochar made from waste biomass here in Wales, and restoring wildflower meadow at Dumyat in Scotland.

  • Young mangroves growing in tidal mud in Mozambique

    Mangroves in Madagascar and Mozambique. My largest tree projects. Mangroves protect coastlines and store carbon, and planting them employs local people.

    Forests and farms in Kenya. Forest restoration and agroforestry, including One Acre Fund’s work helping farmers grow trees alongside their crops.

A tree for every order

For every order, I fund the planting of one tree through Ecologi’s planting partners, including Eden: People+Planet. I don’t count these trees towards offsetting my emissions, but over their lifetime they’ll draw carbon out of the air, restore habitats and provide local jobs. 🌳

A lower-impact online shop

Lavender and Lemon is a digital-first business, so the platform behind my shop matters too. My shop runs on Shopify, whose platform is hosted mainly on Google Cloud, which is working towards running on 100% carbon-free energy by 2030. Shopify says that since 2019 it has bought enough green energy to cover the gas and electricity footprint of its Canadian operations, and it has signed a power purchase agreement that funded a new wind farm. In June 2022 Shopify launched Planet, the app I use to fund carbon removal for every delivery.

Carbon removal for every delivery

Every delivery has a carbon footprint. Through Shopify Planet, the emissions from shipping each order are estimated from its weight, distance and delivery method, and I fund carbon removal to match, through companies vetted by Shopify’s scientific partners. This covers shipping only, not making the products. Carbon removal is a young industry and some removals take years to complete, so I see this as funding progress, not cancelling out my impact.

  • Cattle grazing on grassland, with the Grassroots Carbon logo

    Grassroots Carbon works with ranchers to restore grassland soils so they capture and store more carbon. It sells its soil carbon removal credits through Carbon Commerce, Shopify’s platform for climate companies.

  • Wildfire-burned forest being restored, with the Mast Reforestation logo

    Mast Reforestation (formerly DroneSeed) replants forests lost to wildfire using proven forestry combined with drones. In 2022 Shopify’s Sustainability Fund committed to buying carbon credits from Mast’s project replanting 300 acres burned in Oregon’s 2020 Beachie Creek Fire.

  • Remora carbon capture unit with the Remora logo

    Remora builds carbon capture units that catch carbon dioxide from diesel engine exhaust before it reaches the air, so it can be stored or reused. It started with lorries and is now working with US freight rail companies to fit its system to trains. Remora is part of Shopify’s Sustainability Fund, which backs companies cutting transport emissions.
